President’s letter

[ Kathi ]Well, fellow gardeners, we have almost made it through the long and hard winter. Our Sign-up Meeting is quickly approaching, and that can only mean that the Spring Opening Day is not far behind. There are tomato seedlings struggling for life on several of my window sills, and I have been promising them a better life at Crows Woods if they can just hang on for a bit. I am really looking forward to seeing all of you at our Winter Meeting on Thursday, March 11th at 7:30 p.m. at the Crows Woods Building. You need to sign up that night or before to ensure your plot. If you have already renewed your membership or had a plot assigned to you by Membership Chairman Cary Simon, then it is yours to begin work. Remember that mid-March is a good time to plant your peas and other cold weather crops such as: cabbage, beets, radishes, leaf lettuce, broccoli, carrots, onions, spinach.

If you know of anyone interested in joining us, please encourage them to attend the Winter Meeting. Opening Day at the Gardens is Saturday, April 17th, starting at 8:00 a.m. Hopefully, most of you will come early and help with the work. We need to put out the hoses, set up the rest area, weed the paths, and generally clean up the area. There are usually a few things broken and in need of repairs. So those of you with skills and tools are greatly appreciated. Gardeners generally bring snacks and we do a bit of socializing along with the work. I hope to see all of you there.

Unfortunately, the weather does not always cooperate with our enthusiasm. We have had several raining, cold openings, but our event will go on regardless. There will be a new members’ tour at 10 a.m., starting at the shed. This is to answer any questions, explain the access to the water and equipment in the shed, and to answer any questions.
